Beautiful hand-carved and wood-fired vase by Wendy Jackson, with a technique called Sgraffito (in Italian,“to scratch”). This is a unique surface decorating technique done by applying colors to the leather hard pottery, and then scratching off parts of the layers to create contrasting images, patterns, and textures, revealing the clay color underneath. This piece was also woodfired, a very time consuming process. The wood fueled kiln must be stoked continuously by hand, usually for days! The natural wood ash from the firing process melts onto the surface of the pottery during the firing, giving the clay earthy golden hues and the glazes rich luscious depth. This earthy 6-sided vase is a unique shape, making it artistic and versatile for flower arranging, utensils, or simply as decorative piece.
