“Rolling Hills” Encaustic Mixed Media

This dreamy encaustic piece by Nancy E. Adams captures rolling hills with grazing sheep off in the distance. Soft greens and blues give it a nostalgic, almost dreamy feel.

Each of Nancy’s encaustic ‘paintings’ begins life as a white piece of cotton fabric. Fiber reactive dyes are applied to the fabric and the resulting ‘landscape’ is glued to a wood panel. To prepare the encaustic medium, she melts together beeswax and damar resin – a hardening and stabilizing agent. Once cooled, this mixture is then reheated to approximately 225 degrees F and applied to the fabric surface. As the wax cools, it is smoothed and manipulated to create interesting textures. Paintings also contain her original photographic images printed on Japanese paper which are embedded into the wax surface. Additional encaustic medium completes the process. Following light hand buffing, the piece is placed into a wood floating frame to create a wonderfully luminescent painting.
