I grew up in post war Finland when commodities were sparse. Old sweaters were unraveled and the yarn was reused for socks, mitts, scarfs and hats. I learned to knit in elementary school. As times got more prosperous one could buy a sweater, factory made, in a store. These store bought items were valued over the more common handmade items. My interest in knitting waned as my interest in boys increased. It is only in my later years that I have really gotten into knitting again. I love the play with colors and patterns.
