Inspired by historic Scandinavian woodenware, Eric began turning replicas of these forms on a foot-powered pole lathe in 2013. He now turns these same forms (“ølskål”, “vangar”, and “snippeskål” especially) on a western electric lathe, while keeping the pole lathe aesthetic of his early work: he only turns green wood, which subtly moves and animates as it dries, and he celebrates tool marks as a sign of the maker, preferring the finish left by a sharp tool to extensive sanding. Eric also uses a variety of food-safe finishes, including milk paints, hassui liquid glass, and urushi lacquer, making his pieces perfect for everyday use. Skål! |
