Sayoko Roberge

Juried Member Since 1995

Sayoko Roberge was born and raised near Kyoto, Japan, an area with a textile tradition stretching back more than 1000 years. After college, Sayoko worked in a Kyoto laboratory making fabric dyes. She also studied the art of traditional Flower Arranging, which influenced her sense of color, and Tea Ceremony, which taught her how to refine and harmonize visual designs. In her VT studio, Sayoko hand-paints and dyes silk cloth, using various techniques including ancient Japanese ones like Shibori (a precise tie-dyeing technique). She fashions her fabrics into comfortable, beautiful contemporary garments, designed for business settings as well as festive occasions and all the ceremonies of life.
