“The Overlook” Framed Woodblock Print

My woodblock printmaking evolved out of my painting practice, yet requires a divergent approach – one that I find refreshing and stimulating, as it forces me out of habitual ways of thinking and working. I make prints using the Japanese mokuhanga technique perfected in Japan during the Edo period, using water-based inks and a hand-held baren to press the inks into the paper. Multiple blocks are carved, inked, and carefully aligned using a system unique to this method, to create multicolored images that can often require dozens of imprints in creating the finished print. I appreciate the simplicity of the tools and techniques and the limitless complexities possible in the finished print.
