Artistic owl lamp by ceramic artist Loring Cheney, fired using a technique called obvara. Similar to raku, obvara is a traditional Eastern European pottery firing technique where a bisqued pot is rapidly cooled by dipping it into a fermented yeast mixture and then into cold water, creating a supple earthy finish on the pottery that enhances textures. Obvara pottery is not food-safe or waterproof, but ideal for purely decorative purposes. Exploring form and surface with a child-like approach, Loring’s playful sculptural work incorporates a wide range of wonderful textures, colors, and firing techniques to create enchanting whimsical creatures.
