From the Artist: Pyrography is an artform that has been around for centuries. The technique, literally meaning writing with fire, involves using a heated metal instrument to burn wood, leather, tagua and gourds leaving behind lines, subtle shades or intricate decorative patterns.Â
Jessie has recently introduced a little known technique called Fumage that has been referred to as painting with smoke. Burning in her imagery first with pyrographic pens she then uses a candle flame to add and layer soot on durable watercolor paper. An array of different tools create marks to generate her evocative imagery in the dreamlike silvery-grey tones. The result is a delicate piece of work that must be protected under glass as the slightest of touches will remove the finely manipulated soot. It is a perfect fusion of these two fascinating fire art forms.
