Adorable raku triceratops with a green frog perched on his back by ceramic artist Loring Cheney. Exploring form and surface with a child-like approach, Loring’s playful sculptural work incorporates a wide range of wonderful textures, colors, and firing techniques to create enchanting whimsical creatures. This dinosaur sculpture is glazed with green, yellow, and flashing metallic glazes, and fired using a raku firing process. Originating in Japan, raku involves pulling the ceramic piece out of the kiln while red hot. The American evolution of this technique introduces the additional step of then dropping the piece into a barrel of combustible material, igniting it and infusing the piece with carbon. Raku glazes are often formulated to react with this turbulent environment, creating a black crackle in the glaze or iridescent flashing colors.
