Adorable obvara sheep sculpture with a bird perched on its back, by ceramic artist Loring Cheney. Exploring form and surface with a child-like approach, Loring’s playful sculptural work incorporates a wide range of wonderful textures, colors, and firing techniques to create enchanting whimsical creatures. This particular piece was fired using obvara, a traditional Eastern European pottery firing technique where a bisqued pot is rapidly cooled by dipping it into a fermented yeast mixture and then into cold water. Similar to Raku pottery, this method creates a supple earthy finish on the pottery that enhances textures. Obvara is not food-safe or waterproof, ideal for purely decorative purposes.
