Michael Updike graduated from Mass College of Art and received his MFA from Vermont College. He is a long standing North Shore artist. Trained as a sculptor, he recently began creating artistic personalized memorial stones as well as unique slate carvings. His work challenges the pictorial paradigms of additive imaging.”I honed my carving skills on old slate roof shingles which then became my primary medium. I use slate with outward signs of wear. Paint, tar, nail holes, fractures, chips and flaking tell of the slate’s former utilitarian life. The scars of its history rest on its surface while I cut through the patina revealing fresher layers of stone.
Imagine this captivating piece in your home! Slate carving of an owl just taking off in flight. Size is 10″ wide x 18″ tall
Nestled in between the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, you will find the historic village of Sandwich and the founding member gallery of the League of NH Craftsmen. Known to locals as the Sandwich Home Industries, our shop was organized and run by mostly craftswomen since 1926 as a way to promote local crafts and provide economic stability in rural NH. We have been offering fine hand-made products and education in the crafts ever since. When you are in the area, visit our charming historic gallery on Main Street, across from the town green. email@example.com centersandwich.nhcrafts.org
