Sculptural hand blown glass cardinals by Chris Sherwin. Made from solid glass, the male cardinal is red while the female is brown with red striping on the wings. From the first gathering of glass from the 2100 degree furnace, to the final heat of the annealing oven, Chris’s blown glass sculptural pieces can be quite labor intensive. Each piece might take up to 3 hours in front of the fire, and often also require a lot of preparation before he even sits down to make the actual piece. He does a lot of designing beforehand, blending custom colors from glass powders, and pulling multiple layers of canes and rods of glass, to make eyes and ears for animal sculptures, or custom leaves and flowers for torchwork designs. The finished pieces are air-cooled at the bench to approximately 1000 degrees, and then carefully placed in an annealing oven where they take about 36 hours to slowly cool. Finally, his work is then coldworked (ground and polished) on the bottom until they reach a high glass polish. After over 27 years of professionally making glass Chris has become efficient with his processes, coming up with new, innovative pieces that separate him from other glassmakers. Show someone how much you love them with this beautiful pair of glass cardinal mates.
Each bird is hand crafted individually. Please expect some slight variation from photos.
Each cardinal is approximately 3 1/4″ height x 4″ length
