Susan Scalera of Middle Room Creations is an artisan of fabric and leather handbags and accessories. Susan designs and produces several pocketbooks, travel bags, accessories, and heirloom-quality sewing notions at her home studio in Lempster, NH. Her bags are inspired largely by her choice of fabrics. Qualities of color, texture, and motif conjure design ideas. For this reason- many of her pieces are truly one-of-a-kind items. Susan’s sewing education began in the “middle room” of the family home- the sewing room, where she learned from her mother and grandmother, both skilled seamstresses. Susan became a member of the League of NH Craftsmen in 1978 as a maker of handmade sheepskin and leather appliqued vests and pillows. For the past four decades she has focused on bag-making. Several pieces continue to bear leather-on-leather applique detail that were a signature of her early work. Susan’s designs are traditional in style and highly functional. She aims to create durable yet lightweight bags that are comfortable and pleasing for long-term use.
