I was a professional classical guitarist before I became a potter, and the transition was surprisingly seamless: The elements of music — flow, rhythm, growth, articulation, repetition, contrast — are also the elements of visual design. The musician plays with them in sound and time, the potter/sculptor plays with them in clay and space.
Just as a musician works a phrase to discover just the right flow and inflection, the potter works a curve to attain the form that awakens the spirit. The subtlest alteration can be the difference between a gesture that lifts the veil and one that is lifeless. That’s a mystery that I do not tire of exploring.
