I have been working with leather since the late sixties, when introduced to the craft. Through my teens, I apprenticed with another leather craftsman, learning the time-honored techniques used to create functional, beautiful items from cowhides. I began exhibiting in the late seventies and have continued to make belts and my distinctive saddle-seat stools through the present day. I begin with domestic veg-tan hides, and create belts, seats, lamps and other products, either solid colors or carved and/or tooled, adding colors with eco-friendly dyes. All work is done by hand, techniques virtually unchanged for centuries. I hammer tools to make impressions, and carve free-hand with a swivel knife. My designs arise from my artistic interpretations of each piece.
