Taught by: Anne McMillan

Course Description:

The Long Stitch Binding is a historical non-adhesive binding that originated in medieval times. It is an excellent option for making journals and sketchbooks that will lie flat.

Students will learn how to prepare signatures for sewing, prepare covers, and how to sew the binding using the long stitch technique. Basic bookbinding tools and techniques will be discussed, such as the papers that can be used, grain direction, and various cover materials used for this book. You will also learn about the history of the stitch. You will be using leather as your cover and a paper suitable for writing, watercolor, or mixed media.

This class does not require prior book-binding experience. Students will leave with a leather-bound journal and a new skill.
